All Saint’s Day Services, Sunday November 3

Sunday, November 3
Special Music (8:30 and 11:00)

On All Saints’ Sunday we gather to give thanks to God for the saints of every time and place to whom we are joined in eternal fellowship, and for those who have been particularly important to us and who, having died, now live in the nearer presence of God. In this spirit we will read the names of those of our congregation who have died this past year.

The song cycle Lux Aerterna, composed by Morten Lauridsen is scored for chorus and chamber orchestra. Each of the movements refer to “Light” and how it is described in sacred Latin texts. Lauridsen comments that “Light” is a universal symbol of illumination at all levels–spiritual, artistic and intellectual. The Second Presbyterian Church Adult Choir, accompanied by orchestra and piano will present Requiem Aeterna and O Nata Lux from Lauridsen’s composition on Sunday, November 3, 2013, at the 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. “All Saints’ Sunday” worship services.

The cost of acquiring the performance rights and of our guest professional musicians for our presentation of Lux Aeterna is supported by funds from the Rule Endowment. In addition to the generous support of the Rule Foundation, the choral scores of Morten Lauridsen’s masterpiece were purchased with donations in memory of Judith Sesser Glover, made to the church by many of her friends and family. We pray that this service will inspire and comfort as we offer thanks for the lives of those who have passed on this year.
