“A Thrill of Hope: The Christmas Story in Word and Art”

In this presentation of the Christmas story, A Thrill of Hope, world-renowned biblical scholars on the faculty of Candler School of Theology offer their expertise in discussions of how the familiar Advent and Christmas texts from Matthew and Luke are brought to life in the art of John August Swanson. Swanson’s art tells Bible stories in finely detailed, brilliantly colored paintings and original prints. Six of the pieces housed at Candler constitute a series known as “the Birth Narrative,” and they are featured in this study.
Study participants will watch a video together each time we meet and will engage in thought-provoking questions to spark fresh insights into this beloved story.
The Bible Study will meet from 9:30-11:00 a.m. in Second Hall and will be led by Jeannie Ford. All are welcome to come.
As the familiar song reminds us, Christ’s birth is a “thrill of hope,” a gift over which “the weary world rejoices.” Come and rejoice with us as we encounter this fresh, creative retelling of this good news!
