The Sermon Roundtable-  A Unique Form of Bible Study

Leader:  Rev. Steve Hancock

Mondays at Noon in the Library                                                             Participants in this class study the Bible by reflecting on the biblical text that is being preached in worship the following Sunday.  Steve Hancock leads the discussion, and each week provides background material about the historical context of the passage, definitions, of key words, authorship, and other information that will be helpful in interpreting the text.  The class is invited to interact with the author of the text, discuss such questions as, “What does the author seem to be saying?” “What do I want to say in response?”  Class members are invited to identify important ideas or themes that are prominent as they reflect on the biblical text in relation to their own lives, the church, and the world around them.  The following Sunday in worship, they have the opportunity to hear the sermon preached they helped create.

First and Third Monday Morning Bible Study

A Theological Discussion of The Shack

9:30-11:00 AM ▪ Second Hall

November 17, December 1 & 15

Come join an engaging theological discussion of the best selling book, The Shack, written by William P. Young.  The story centers around Mackenzie Allen Philips, whose youngest daughter has been abducted and most likely killed in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness.  Four years later, “Mack” receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack.

The story invites readers to wrestle with questions concerning God’s presence (or lack thereof) in the midst of unspeakable pain and tragedy, along with the nature of the Trinity, forgiveness, healing, and the purpose of eternal life.

Participants are asked to read the book before the study begins and to come ready to discuss the engaging images of God presented in the book, as well as how the author answers questions we ponder about God.

The author of the book was born a Canadian and raised among a stone-age tribe by his missionary parents in the highlands of what was New Guinea.  He suffered great loss as a child and young adult, and now enjoys what he calls “the wastefulness of grace” with his family in the Pacific Northwest.

Patrick M. Roddy, Emmy Award Winning Producer of ABC News says of the book: "The Shack is a one of a kind invitation to journey to the very heart of God. Through my tears and cheers,  I have been indeed transformed by the tender mercy with which William Paul Young opened the veil that too often separated me from God and from myself. With every page, the complicated do’s and don’t that distort a relationship into a religion were washed away as I understood Father, Son, and Holy Ghost for the first time in my life."
