The members of Second Presbyterian Church take seriously their commitment to serving others by volunteering on a regular basis in many ways. Some serve on state and national ministries of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and ministries connected to the greater church such as the Medical Benevolence Foundation. This ministry provides millions of dollars and volunteers around the world for the work of medical missions.

Other members live out their commitment through local organizations. Some of these agencies and ministries are: Habitat for Humanity (partners with low income families to provide safe affordable housing), Arkansas Rice Depot (serves the hungry through food pantries, shelters, school programs, and shut-in and disaster relief programs) Our House (provides emergency shelter, housing and job training to help the homeless re-enter society), Stewpot (serves the hungry a warm, free, noon-time meal five days a week), and St. Francis House (provides emergency services to the neediest and most underserved persons in the community).

UPDATE ON SECOND'S RESPONSE TO HURRICANES KATRINA AND RITA
Second Presbyterian members have given over $45,000.00 in direct dollars to the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance fund to provide relief for Katrina and Rita evacuees. Thank you for your very generous response.

We continue to deal with individual situations and needs as they come to our attention. To date we have been involved with equipping two family units who lost everything in the hurricanes. Both are now in local apartments. Ferncliff Camp and Conference Center is the field site for Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. There is an ongoing need for volunteers to do two things at Ferncliff:

  1. Telephone volunteers are needed to handle requests and inquiries coming into the PDA center.
  2. Other volunteers are needed to check in or check out the many disaster relief kits that are coming in to Ferncliff from around the country.

To volunteer for either of these needs, contact Ferncliff at 501-821-3063.

The next Gulf Mission Trip with other volunteers from Arkansas Presbytery is scheduled for October 12-18, 2008.
