Second Presbyterian Church

Stewardship 2022: Pathways to Generosity is the theme for this year’s stewardship campaign.

This year we invite you to join the congregation in reading a daily devotional. While you are reading the devotional, reflect and pray about the gift God has given us in Christ.

Daily Devotional

The Reopening the Church Task Force has recommended that we meet virtually for worship during the Omicron surge. The statistics are daunting as you may know if you have followed the news. Hospitals are filling and health care workers are over-extended. So, the bad news is that we made a decision to be virtual only this Sunday. No “in person” worship. That’s the bad news. The good news is that the Task Force expects it to be a very short surge so that this move to virtual worship is temporary. Hopefully, only one or two Sundays. So, agreeing with their recommendation to the Session, we are suspending in person worship for this Sunday. The Session will consider further actions at their Tuesday meeting as we seek to be responsible during this COVID surge.

Sunday School classes will meet via Zoom this Sunday. Zoom links will be available in the Second Connections e-mail sent on Sunday morning.

In addition to virtual worship, we are urging groups to meet virtually instead of in person. Again, we hope for just a couple of weeks.

We are grateful for a Task Force that includes so many wise people who are knowledgeable beyond what you may read in the papers. They are looking out for the health of our church and our community. And they carry the burden of telling us what we may not want to hear. But for our good. It is a way to love our neighbor and one another.

On Sunday, January 23, all middle and high school SPY are invited to Ferncliff for s’mores, and to work together on programming for the New Year. Drop off at the church parking lot at 4:00 p.m. and pick up at 6:30 p.m. Can’t wait to see you!

Sunday, February 27, 5:30-7:00 p.m. in The Great Hall. Learn all about the plans for the summer including trips to Mo-Ranch and Montreat. Summertime will be here before we know it!

Each year on Easter Sunday, our congregation participates in the One Great Hour of Sharing, a special offering of our denomination that helps people to reclaim and restore their lives. Your gift to this offering allows Presbyterian Disaster Assistance to respond to communities around the world affected by disaster. It helps the Presbyterian Hunger Program work with Presbyterians and other partners to alleviate hunger and eliminate its causes in this country and internationally. It makes it possible for Self-Development of People to affirm the dignity of all by assisting in the empowerment of economically poor, oppressed, and disadvantaged members of our community.

This year we will receive the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering on Easter Sunday, April 17, 2022. You may give to this offering online or mail your donation to the church office. Thank you for your support.

A Service of Healing and Reflection– To Acknowledge the Lasting Pain of the Pandemic

Wednesday, April 27th , 6:00 p.m.  in the Chapel

The Arkansas Center for Health Improvement has asked faith communities to hold a special service on April 27th as we enter the third year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Second Church will participate with a 30 minute service in the chapel. As ACHI notes, “it is important to pause and reflect on the impact and loss we have all experienced.” Most of us have known someone who has been ill or even died during this pandemic. All of our lives have been disrupted. Please join us for this service of music, meditation and prayer. You are invited to bring the names of those for whom you request special prayer.

Maundy Thursday, April 14, 6:00 p.m., Great Hall

This service will include a simple meal, communion, hymns, scripture, foot washing, and a homily. Since a meal is included in this service, the kitchen staff needs to know how much food to prepare. The registration deadline is Sunday, April 10.

Register here.
