College Mission Trip
Great Success
Sara
Akin, Chris Arnold, Claire Jones (St. James UMC), Bolton
Kirchner, Audrey Ray, Marigayden Tippit, Lucy Vitela, Evelyn
Coleman and Jim Miller, nine tired but satisfied Volunteers in
Mission from Second Presbyterian returned late Saturday
afternoon, May 24, following a week of work and recreation on
the Gulf Coast. Working out of the Orange Grove
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Camp just north of Gulfport,
the group worked with three different homeowners painting,
tearing up flooring, putting down flooring, installing dry wall,
and generally helping with things the homeowners still needed
fixed following hurricane Katrina three years ago. Audrey
Ray somehow found the time to make a Second Presbyterian of
Little Rock arrow sign to join many many others that have been
left on six different totem poles by various churches and groups
in the Orange Grove Camp. The team spent Friday morning in
New Orleans on a Katrina Damage Tour put together by the PDA,
and then Friday night enjoying dinner and time on the town.
Hats off to the students for their energy and work, and to
Evelyn Coleman who planned and organized the trip.

Montreat
College Conference 2008
On January 3, 2008 seven college
students started the new year by attending the Montreat College
Conference. The conference theme was "Hope Has a Voice"
and it centered on finding hope through God in times of despair.
Speakers included: several students from Virginia Tech who spoke
about finding hope in the chaos that consumed their campus
during the fatal shooting last April; Shane Claiborne, a
co-founder of the Simple Way community who has worked with
Mother Teresa and volunteered in Iraq during the initial stages
of the war there; and Ishmael Beah, author of A Long Way Gone,
a book about his days as a child soldier in Sierra Leone and his
rehabilitation afterwards. These speakers made the
conference a touching, interesting, and extremely meaningful
experience for all of us. Although the speakers spoke of
pretty heavy issues, there was plenty of time for fun as members
of our group hiked, attended a barn dance, got some shopping in,
and went out to eat. This was an experience not easily
forgotten and one I'm sure we will all want to repeat in 2009!
- Daniel Ford
Those who attended were: Sarah Akin,
Alexa Britton, Lauren Carrigan, Daniel Ford, Bolton Kirchner,
Marigayden Tippit, and Lucy Vitela.
