Second Presbyterian Church seeks a full-time director of youth ministries who brings experience, depth of faith, energy, creativity and a vision of youth ministry where youth experience spiritual growth, support, service to others and fellowship.
“We, the members of Second Presbyterian Church as children of God, are called through the Sacrament of Baptism to remember whose we are as we discover who we are. We envision Youth Ministry as holistic and balanced by design to support the physical, spiritual, emotional, mental and social developmental needs of youth. Responding to God’s grace and love, youth and adults come together as intentional partners in worship, learning, creation, fellowship and service. We celebrate differences and cherish each other’s gifts in an environment of love, forgiveness and understanding. Youth Ministry is key to the life and vitality of the church, enriching its present and defining its future.”
In a given year, there are approximately 100 youth involved in our program. This includes about 70 youth who participate on a regular basis and another 30 or so youth who participate on a more occasional basis.
Currently, there are about 25 youth and adults serving on the Youth Ministry committee. The Director of Youth Ministry supports this committee. The committee is responsible for assisting the Director in developing and implementing programming and other activities for our youth. During the past year, we had eight active adult Youth Advisors.
On June 4, 2006 Second Presbyterian Church opened a state-of-the-art 7600 sq. ft. Youth Building. Almost all on-campus youth activities take place in the Youth Building. It is a place where each youth is seen and valued as an individual and where youth are active in leadership. It is a place where emphasis is placed on developing a safe, loving community in which self-esteem is strengthened, Christianity is modeled, faith is nurtured, and the Bible is learned and exemplified. We also offer the building to about 25 church groups each year as they travel to and from mission trips and youth conferences around the country.
Kickoff Parking Lot Party
We kick off the new school year with a big party in the parking lot of the church. This party is complete with music, food, inflatable games, and lots of fun! Youth are encouraged to bring a friend to the party.
Our Youth Sunday School program is divided into three classes: Middle School – 6th and 7th graders; Confirmation – 8th Graders; and Senior High – 9th through12th graders. Classes take place in the Youth Building each Sunday morning. For the past several years, our Middle Schoolers have been using the We Believe survey courses for the Old and New Testament (alternating between OT one year and NT the next). The Confirmation Class usually runs from September through February and is organized by our Church Educator. The Sr. High class pulls from a variety of curricula and explores a variety of topics, including Christian living, Bible Study, Pop Culture, and more.
We call our Sunday night programming “SPY Sunday.” During this time, we try to have a balance between Mission & Service, Fellowship & Fun, and Study & Discussion. Our current schedule for SPY Sunday is:
Middle School (6th-8th grades): 5:00-6:00
Dinner for all youth: 6:00-6:30
Sr. High (9th-12th grades): 6:30-7:30
These are all-church mid-week series that typically occur for four consecutive Wednesdays in the fall and four consecutive Wednesdays in the spring. Youth programming for Wednesdays Together has varied from year to year. Previous series have included: YouTube Devotionals, Middle School Sexuality classes, Sr. High Bible Study, and various mission projects.
