Second Readers will discuss Tara Westover’s memoir, Educated, her story of growing up in a survivalist household in the mountains of Idaho. Having never been to school or seen a doctor, her eyes were opened after an older brother came home from college with news of the world beyond the mountain. Deciding to try a new way of life, Tara taught herself enough math, grammar and science to take the ACT and get into Brigham Young University. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents to study at Harvard and Cambridge University. Educated is an account of the struggle for self-invention, a tale of fierce family loyalty and of the grief that comes from severing one’s closest ties.
