What

The Youth Choir of Second Presbyterian Church is a volunteer chorus made up of students from SPC’s Youth Program. Activities for this ensemble include worship leadership, retreats, concerts, touring, and local musical events.

When

The Youth Choir rehearses from 5:00-5:40 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Learn More

In addition to serving as a musical extension of the Second Presbyterian Youth, the Youth Choir is designed to promote appreciation for liturgical music and foster practical skills in music performance and worship leadership. As such, Youth Choir participants may audition for the adult choir once they enter high school. We are proud of our many alumni who have gone on to pursue careers in music and worship leadership as singers, conductors, and pastors.

Children’s Music

At Second Presbyterian Church we welcome all children to participate in the music ministry of the church. We promise to find ways for every child to be involved. We invite parents to share with us the most helpful ways to teach your child, and share the love of God and music with your young musician. All God’s children are welcome to participate at whatever level they are comfortable.

Children’s Choir

Kindergarten through fifth graders are invited to join us on Wednesday evenings during the school year. Children work on developing their singing voices, basic musical skills, early music reading, as well as growing in their faith through song.

Children’s Bells

Children’s Bells meet on Wednesday evenings during the school year. While children are invited and encouraged to participate in both ensembles, it’s perfectly acceptable to choose one or the other. This ensemble offers music in worship several times during the school year.

Children’s Sunday School Music

During Sunday School music we sing songs that help us grow in our faith and include songs that emphasize themes and stories being taught in the daily lessons. Example: The Parable of the Wise and Foolish Builder, Matthew 7:24-27, and the song, The Wise Man Built His House Upon the Rock. Music happens during the gathering time for our elementary aged children, and during the Sunday School hour for our preschoolers.

Praeclara Ringers

Our church is the host to Praeclara Ringers, an advanced community ensemble that rehearses at Second Presbyterian on Thursday evenings. Praeclara Ringers requires advanced skills and an audition interview before participating. Praeclara Ringers have concerts year round.

Youth Ringers

Our Youth Ringers program is growing! Come join us. Our ensemble rehearses during the school year, Wednesdays at 6:50 p.m. and offers music in worship on a regular basis. One of the things this group loves doing is ringing in our community, and bringing bells to the driveways and doorsteps of our church members who are not able to get out.

Meet our Staff

Second Presbyterian Church’s Music Ministry is led by an energetic and caring staff dedicated to providing opportunities for you to share your love of music with others in meaningful ways.

Organ

The Sanctuary organ was designed, built and installed in 2020 by Nichols & Simpson Organbuilders, Inc. It replaces a 1970 organ built by Tellers. The instrument is comprised of six divisions and 58 ranks controlled by a 4-manual console.

The new organ was planned as part of the Second Vision Capital Campaign, and made possible by the generosity of members and friends of Second Presbyterian Church.

Although the organ contains mostly new pipes built by A.R. Schopp’s Sons, it retains many pipes from the church’s 1970 Tellers organ, and 1925 Austin organ.

The organ case was designed by Frank Friemel to match the original woodwork found throughout the Sanctuary, and was built by R.A. Colby, Inc.

One unique feature of the organ is the English-style Tuba Major. This stop is hooded and speaks on 15″ of wind pressure. The Tuba is located in the String division of the organ in its own expression box which opens into the String expression box, thus giving this stop double expression capability.
