The topic of the study will be the women in the Gospel of John. When Dan Brown’s novel The Da Vinci Code was published, it posed difficult questions about the role of women in Jesus’ life and in the early church, and brought these questions to the forefront of biblical conversations. Judith Kay Jones, author of The Women in the Gospel of John, contends that the gospel of John does not just include stories about women, it is structured around stories of women. In this unique testament, women and their encounter with Jesus provide the framework for the central message of Jesus. The 7 sessions, which begin on Monday, February 4, and will continue through May 20, will include studying:
- The Mother of Jesus at Cana
- The Samaritan Woman
- The Woman Taken in Adultery
- Martha of Bethany
- Mary of Bethany
- The Mother of Jesus at the Cross
- Mary Magdalene
Judith Kay Jones is a pastor in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in California, and has led workshops and retreats in the areas of worship and the arts, feminist theology and spirituality at regional and national gatherings.
The Bible Study group meets from 9:30-11:00 AM in Second Hall. All are welcome to come. Study books may be purchased in the church office for $10. Participants are asked to read the Introduction and Chapter 1 before coming to class on Monday, February 4.
