The Death Penalty in Arkansas
Adult Sunday School Class
June 1, 8, 15, 22
Moderator: Jim Guy Tucker
Location: Second Hall

The death penalty is one of the most divisive issues in contemporary society. Does it work? Is it fair? Is it humane? Proponents often quote the Old Testament’s “an eye for an eye” concept of justice, while opponents harken back to Jesus’ call to “turn the other cheek.” In this class we will begin with an exploration of biblical and theological perspectives on the death penalty (led by Steve Hancock), then turn to pragmatic issues related to current Arkansas law, death row statistics, sentencing/ pardoning information, and case examples. Presenters will include:

Dustin McDaniel, Attorney General of Arkansas

  • Ray Hobbs, Director of Arkansas Department of Corrections
  • Charles Chastain, UALR Professor, Criminal Justice Dept.
  • Mary Parker, UALR Professor, Criminal Justice Dept.
  • Larry Jegley, 6th District Prosecuting Attorney
  • Jeff Rosenzweig, Defense Counsel

This class continues Second Presbyterian Church’s commitment to address important ethical and moral issues that face us as Christians.
