Second Presbyterian Church

Sunday, February 27, 5:30-7:00 p.m. in The Great Hall. Learn all about the plans for the summer including trips to Mo-Ranch and Montreat. Summertime will be here before we know it!

Stewardship 2022: Pathways to Generosity is the theme for this year’s stewardship campaign.

This year we invite you to join the congregation in reading a daily devotional. While you are reading the devotional, reflect and pray about the gift God has given us in Christ.

The Reopening the Church Task Force has recommended that we meet virtually for worship during the Omicron surge. The statistics are daunting as you may know if you have followed the news. Hospitals are filling and health care workers are over-extended. So, the bad news is that we made a decision to be virtual only this Sunday. No “in person” worship. That’s the bad news. The good news is that the Task Force expects it to be a very short surge so that this move to virtual worship is temporary. Hopefully, only one or two Sundays. So, agreeing with their recommendation to the Session, we are suspending in person worship for this Sunday. The Session will consider further actions at their Tuesday meeting as we seek to be responsible during this COVID surge.

Sunday School classes will meet via Zoom this Sunday. Zoom links will be available in the Second Connections e-mail sent on Sunday morning.

In addition to virtual worship, we are urging groups to meet virtually instead of in person. Again, we hope for just a couple of weeks.

We are grateful for a Task Force that includes so many wise people who are knowledgeable beyond what you may read in the papers. They are looking out for the health of our church and our community. And they carry the burden of telling us what we may not want to hear. But for our good. It is a way to love our neighbor and one another.

Please join in welcoming Jody Welker as our Transitional Senior Pastor. Jody and his wife Sharon are traveling this week from their full-time home in Black Mountain, NC, so that he can be with us for January 2 worship and beyond. He will lead us through this season of transition. I’m sure your warm hospitality will ensure a grace-filled arrival, as he begins to lead ministry among us.
You don’t even have to wait until Sunday to hear from him. Here is a welcome message from Jody himself, meant for you.  Just click on the link below.

CHRISTMAS EVE OFFERING

Christmas Joy Offering: Each year during the Advent and Christmas season, we celebrate the wondrous gift of Jesus Christ, our Savior. By giving to the PC(USA)’s Christmas Joy Offering, we celebrate the gift of Jesus by providing assistance to current and retired church workers in their time of need and by developing our future leaders at Presbyterian-related schools and colleges who are equipping communities of color. Fifty percent of the Christmas Joy Offering recognizes the faithfulness of current and retired church workers by providing funds to help them through difficult times. The other fifty percent of the offering provides basic operating costs and scholarships to deserving students at Presbyterian-related schools and colleges that nurture racial and ethnic diversity. This has been a Presbyterian commitment for nearly 140 years. You may give online or mail a check to the church office. Thank you for your generosity!
