Revelation and Resistance: Reading the Apocalypse in an Age of Empire – Led by Dr. Robert (Bobby) Williamson. The New Testament book of Revelation remains one of the Bible’s most troubling texts. Some read it as a prediction of the Antichrist while others dismiss it as a bizarre historical relic. Many choose not to read it at all! This course will argue that Revelation does in fact have an important message for the contemporary church, but not in the way it is commonly understood. Rather, Revelation presents its readers with a call to resist Empire in all its forms, both ancient and modern, having faith in Christ alone. Beginning with its ancient Roman context, we will explore what that resistance meant in its own time, and what it might mean for us today.

All 4 year olds through 5th graders are invited to join the Children’s Choir on Sunday, February 7, for a Super Bowl Sundae ice cream party. We will meet and eat during our “regular” choir time, 3:00-4:30. Drop-off and Pick-up are at the choir room. No reservations are needed. If you have questions, please contact Mary Ibis at maryibis@secondpres.org.

On Friday, October 23 at 4:30 pm, Second Presbyterian members and friends are invited to work with one of our Outreach Ministry partners, Arkansas Interfaith Power & Light, to assemble Tighten Up Treat bags and distribute them at an event at St. Francis House. These treat bags contain power strips, faucet aerators, CFL bulbs, and socket sealers. During the event, we will discuss the importance of energy efficiency improvements, serve healthy snacks, and show a documentary about earth care to clients of St. Francis House and residents of the community. On Tuesday, November 17, at 5:30 pm, we will bring a nutritious meal sourced from local gardens and farmers to St. Francis House and present a documentary about food and sustainability. Stay tuned for more details. If you have questions, please contact Scharmel Roussell at scharmel2008@gmail.com or (501) 772-9906, or Rick Owen at rickowen@sbcglobal.net or (501) 307-9593.

Did you know that Arkansans use more than 11 billion gallons of water daily and it is estimated that our needs will increase by 13% by 2050?  Join us on November 24 at 7 pm in Second Presbyterian Church’s Second Hall as Ed Swaim, Water Resources Division Manager for the Arkansas Natural Resources Commission, explains how critical an effective and reliable water plan is for effective management of this essential resource.  This progam is co-sponsored by Second Presbyterian Environmental Stewardship, League of Women Voters Pulaski County, ArkansasInterfaith PowerandLight, and Ozark Society, Pulaski Chapter.  For more information, visit arkansaswaterplan.org, or contact Alice Andrews at 501-219-4295.

Join us as we welcome our new interim for Young Adult Ministry and Nine O’Clock Worship, Rachel Shepherd.  Rachel comes to us from Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, Virginia.  While a student there, she served as intern at Ashland Presbyterian Church in Ashland, Virginia, and Montreat Conference Center in Montreat, North Carolina.  Rachel has a B.A. in French from Davidson College and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.   She completed her Clinical Pastoral Education at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina.   Rachel was active in the Young Professionals Ministry at Pine Valley United Methodist Church in Wilmington, North Carolina.   She has been a guest and supply preacher throughout Virginia and North Carolina.  She is married to James Shepherd.  Rachel will be leading the Nine O’clock Worship Service and the Young Adult Ministry.

Calling all dogs, cats, turtles, and hamsters!  On October 5 at 2:00 p.m., our church will be joining with Grace Presbyterian Church for a special Blessing of the Animals service.  We invite you to bring your family pet (all species welcome!) to this casual service as we celebrate God’s good creation and the role that animals play in our lives.  The service will take place in the courtyard of Grace Presbyterian (9301 N. Rodney Parham Road), and if you are able, please consider bringing a bag of dog or cat food for the Humane Society of Pulaski County.  We do ask that all animals remain either leashed or in a cage/aquarium throughout the service. If you have any questions, please contact Lindy Vogado at lindyvogado@secondpreslr.org or 227-0000.
